PUBLIC STATEMENT ON STATUS OF ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENT
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), in cooperation with sponsor Washoe County
Water Conservancy District (WCWCD), and partner Steamboat Canal & Irrigation Company (SCIC), began the Truckee River Watershed Project
planning process, also known as the Steamboat Canal Project, in Washoe County, Nevada in late 2020. The proposed project intended to use
federal funds from the NRCS Watershed Protection and Prevention Program (PL 83-566) to identify improvements within the Truckee River Watershed
that would provide flood protection and improve agricultural water management within SCIC’s system. The proposed project was sponsored by WCWCD
on behalf of SCIC. J-U-B Engineers, Inc. was hired to conduct an Environmental Assessment and had begun the scoping process with a scoping meeting
and accepting public comments.
In consideration of public comments received to date, and an intent to re-evaluate the feasibility, scope and extent of the project, as well
as the effectiveness of the proposed project to meet conservation criteria; and identify the level of technical services that would be required
to complete the project, the planning process has been halted at this time.
Comments received will be documented to inform NRCS of the interests and concerns associated with potential improvements to the SCIC system.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) is proposing a project (Proposed Project) sponsored by the Washoe County Water Conservation District (WCWCD) on behalf of the Steamboat Canal & Irrigation Company (SCIC) to use federal funds to make improvements within the Truckee River Watershed to provide flood protection and improve agricultural water management within SCIC's system. The proposed project would be located in Washoe County, Nevada. Construction is estimated for a two-year period from 2023 to 2025, pending environmental approval. NRCS will prepare an environmental document (as an EA/EIS) as required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), and the USDA NEPA implementing regulations.
